Project Type: Library
In a neighborhood that constantly seeks to publicly display its distinct identity and culture through its vibrant street life, the role of the library should act to preserve, display, and educate others on these customs and traditions, as well as serve as a condenser of public activities. The branch library’s purpose should restrain from collecting any and all forms of knowledge, but instead embrace a group of highly specialized collections that represent the interests and cultural resources of the population it serves. To achieve this, an aggregate of distinct libraries are compressed into a single form that acts to simultaneously separate and join the knowledge and spaces that it contains. The plan at the street level stays open – allowing for a free flow and exchange of information through the programming of activities that relate to the individual collections above. The library becomes a place that both identifies and celebrates the distinct aspects that form the neighborhood’s collective identity, but also allows them a space to come together and be consumed by the public.
